Abstract
1,080,881. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. March 19, 1964 [Feb. 26, 1963], No. 7645/63. Heading F2E. In a disc brake of the kind in which friction pad assemblies are adapted to be brought into engagement with opposite faces of a rotatable disc, the friction pad assemblies being located in a caliper which straddles a portion of the periphery of the disc, a friction pad assembly 14, 15 is guided for movement towards and away from the disc by oppositely inclined torque-taking guides formed by surfaces 18, 19 in the split caliper 10, the guiding surfaces 18, 19 co-operating with complementary inclined end surfaces 16, 17 on the friction pad whereby a servo or self-energizing action is obtained in both directions of rotation of the disc. The embodiment shown discloses friction pad assemblies on each side of the disc actuated by inclined piston and cylinder mechanisms 24, 23. In a modification, the innermost and outermost edges of each friction pad assembly may be inclined with respect to the axis of the disc whereby as the friction pad wears and the pad assembly moves outwardly the effective centre of pressure of the friction pad moves inwardly through substantially the same distance and remains substantially at the same effective radius throughout the life of the pad. The invention is applicable to disc brakes of the single-sided type in which either the caliper or the disc is axially movable and only one friction pad assembly is directly actuated, the other pad assembly being brought into engagement with the disc by the reaction on the caliper or disc.
