1,212,838. Packaging-machines. J. H. G. OLLIER, S. M. A. M. J. GROSSHANS, and R. G. MASSON. 21 Nov., 1967 [24 Nov., 1966], No. 52893/67. Heading B8C. A packaging machine in which containers are formed from flexible webs of thermoplastic material or the like, and comprising a heating station, a forming station, a filling station, a welding station and a cutting station in combination with means for displacing the webs step by step, is characterized in that the said work stations have separate and fixed supports and comprise means for the adjustment of the position along the work path of tools comprised by each station. After passing through a heating station A, a web 1 has recesses formed in it at a station B. A second web 2, which may be thermoplastic or light alloy, is sealed over the first at a station C and individual closed containers are cut from the webs at a station D and delivered to a conveyer 7. The webs are pulled intermittently in the direction F by means (not described) engaging the part 9 of the webs remaining after cutting. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, an upper tool 10 may be adjusted by means of a rack 14 which engages a pinion 12 controlled by a hand wheel 13. A corresponding lower tool 11 is connected to the tool 10 by guide columns 16 which permit relative vertical movement between the tools 10 and 11. Both tools can thus be moved together along the work path, and a locking member may be provided. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the adjustment may be effected by a threaded shaft (20) engaging a nut (22) on the tool 10. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), a vertical shaft (25) has two pinions, each engaging a rack (28, 31) on the tools 10, 11 respectively, the shaft being telescopically constructed to allow relative vertical movement. The construction and operation of the tools may be as described in Specification 866,314.
