Abstract

1,212,619. Gear cutting. SINGER CO. 8 Oct., 1968 [30 Oct., 1967], No. 47614/68. Heading B3K. [Also in Division F2] An antibacklash gear 10<SP>11</SP> or rack (10<SP>111</SP>), Fig. 6 (not shown), is formed from a blank, e.g. of acetal resin plastics, including a resilient web 12<SP>1</SP> and a frusto-conical rim 16<SP>11</SP>, by distorting the web out of its normal plane and cutting the teeth in this distorted position. As shown, the web is mounted on an arbor 34 against a deflection plate 36 by a locking nut 46. The nut is tightened to deflect the rim 1611 into a position parallel to the web axis. A conventional hob 50 cuts the teeth and the web is released. In use with conventional gears, the web and teeth are again distorted by the gears to mesh tightly. The web may be formed with an integral hub, Fig. 2 (not shown), or may be mounted on a hub (24), Fig. 1 (not shown), by a pin (25) passing through the hub and web, the gear being mounted on a shaft by a lock nut (32) on a split extension (28) of the hub. Spur, helical or worm-wheel gears may be formed by this method.
