Frames and framing; plating.- In barges or vessels built of channelled or flanged steel plates 16 with inwardly projecting flanges 16<1>, welded, bolted, or riveted together, each plate extends in one continuous piece from bow to stern, and is formed of a number of flanged or like sections welded together end to end. The welded joints in adjacent plates break joint. Continuous keels on plates 17, 20 and a continuous side stringer 24 are disposed between the inturned flanges 16<1>; similarly, plates 21, 25 are disposed between the flanges 16' and are intercostal between transverse floor plates 22, side web frames 26, and deck plates 29. All transverse members are welded to the hull and deck plating. The shell plates may be flanged at the bottom only, as shown in Fig. 12. In this case, the side stringer 56 is arranged under the flange 55 of the upper plate 54 and adjacent the edge of the lower plate 54'. These plates are then all welded together at 57.
