[Also in Division B8] In the ratchet device of Specification 1,211,544, for a multi-stroke handbrake of a vehicle or trailer, a cable drum 6 rigid with a ratchet wheel 9 has, on the side remote from the ratchet wheel, a flange 8 which extends close to a fixed member 15 so that the gap 23 therebetween is less than the thickness of the cable to be used with the drum. The member 15 is a spacer, or the shank of a bolt connecting a front plate 3 to a backplate 1 of the device, the bolt form ing the pivot of a spring loaded holding pawl 12.
