Abstract
1,211,665. Making electrical components; jointing by stamping. AMP Inc. 27 May, 1969 [19 June, 1968, 13 Sept., 1968], No. 26648/69. Headings B3A and B3Q. Apparatus for crimping an electrical connector 10 forming part of a strip 2 of electrical connectors to an end of a wire, comprises first 186, 188 and second 176, 178 crimping dies relatively movable from a first open position to a second closed crimping position, a die actuating member 32 having a lost motion connection to the first die 186, 188, resilient means 202 arranged to bias the first die away from the die actuating member 32 to the limit of the lost motion connection in a direction towards the second die 176, 178 to a first operative position and means 204, 208 for moving the first die 186, 188 relative to the die actuating member 32 away from the second die in a direction towards the die actuating member against the action of the resilient means 202 from the first operative position to a second position remote from the second die 176, 178 thereby permitting access to the space between the dies. The lost motion mechanism comprises a pair of arms 194 each extending upwardly from a die mounting block 192 and slidably mounted in a slot 196 on each side of the ram 32. The ram 32 is further provided on each side with a slot 200, each slot receiving a pin 198 extending through an arm 194. The die mounting block 192 is biased downwardly relative to the ram 32 by means of a spring 202 so that during downward movement of the ram 32 the spring 202 is compressed and the pins 198 move relatively upwardly in the slots 200 until the lost motion has been taken up. A pin 204 on the die mounting block 192 extends above a reduced end 206 of a pivoted arm 208 so that when a handle 220 is moved upwardly bearing 214, extending through slot 216 and mounted eccentrically on a shaft 218, raises the arm 208 and the die mounting block 192 relative to the ram 32. In operation the carrier belt 2 having the terminals 10 is fed intermittently between the crimping dies 176, 178, 186 and 188 by a feed belt 74 and the end of a wire is placed in a terminal 10 so that it touches a detector 225 which operates a "single shot" clutch to close the dies and crimp the connector on to the wire.
