Abstract

1,211,588. Electro-photographic apparatus. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. June 24, 1968 [July 12, 1967; July 13, 1967], No.30072/68. Heading G2H. An apparatus in which latent electrostatic images are formed on a record medium by an image generator has a developing apparatus supplied with developer or a constituent thereof under the control of signals applied to the image generator. A cathode ray tube 3, Fig.1, produces an image on a uniformly charged drum 1 the latent image being developed by developer 7 supplied by a cascade developing apparatus 6. The developer 7 contains toner and carrier. The cathode ray tube 3 is supplied from a signal source 20. Toner feed signal means 25 are supplied with intensity and on/off signals along lines 24 and 26 respectively. The intensity signals are integrated in the means 25 and fed to a toner supply actuator 28 which controls the actuation of a toner supply hopper 30. The toner controlled may alternatively be liquid toner. The signal means 25 may be as described with reference to Fig.2 (not shown) in which the intensity signals are applied to a capacitor (41) which is charged as signals are applied to line (24). A transistor (52) conducts when the voltage on line (51) exceeds a predetermined level, thereby switching transistor (53) off. Pulses are applied along line (57) to a multivibrator (62). In a modification of the toner feed signal means 25, Fig.1, the head (H) Fig.3 (not shown) of toner controls sensing mechanism which actuates an arm (194) co-operating with a resistance (195) such that when the toner level is high a higher charge on a capacitor (141) will be required before toner replenishment is effected by an actuator (201). Instead of integrating signals supplied to the cathode ray tube individual signals may be counted by a counter (222) Fig.4 (not shown) which after a preset number of signals delivers a signal to a driver (224) which operates a relay (226). Relay (226) closes a circuit to an actuator (227) which controls a toner metering device (229). Signals may also be derived from a high speed printer Fig.5 (not shown) to control a toner distributer (236).
