Abstract

1,210,359. Two-part couplings. M.K. ELECTRIC Ltd. 29 Dec., 1967 [22 Feb., 1967], No. 8521/67. Heading H2E. An electrical socket outlet having two socket contacts has a shutter 14 which is arranged to rotate to its open position only on insertion of both pins of a co-operating plug and only when the shutter has moved a predetermined axial distance away from the front wall 12. On insertion of both pins, the shutter 14 tends to rotate owing to the sloping top surfaces of projections 15, 16 on the shutter, but is restrained by engagement of the projections 15, 16 within openings 13 and by the engagement of shoulders (25) on the shutter with side faces of abutments 23 on the rear of the front wall 12. When the projections 15, 16 clear the openings 13, the shutter rotates, the shoulders (25) moving down sloping back faces 24 of the abutments 23, so allowing entry of the plug pins into the contact cavity. When the pins are withdrawn, the spring 22 produces the reverse operation to close the shutter. If only one pin is inserted, the shutter tilts to one side, its rotation being prevented by engagement of one projection 15 or 16 in an opening 13, while inward movement of the shutter is prevented by engagement of an annular shoulder 26 with conical side wall 27 of entrance well 20. Further tilting of the shutter is also obstructed by engagement of projection 17 with the edge of recess 18.
