Abstract

1,210,211. Image intensifier tubes. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 11 Jan., 1968 [11 Oct., 1966], No. 45480/66. Heading H1D. In an image intensifier tube a component such as the photocathode or in a cascade image intensifier a dynode which is only mounted in permanent position after the tube envelope has been sealed is held in position by a locking member constituted by a bimetallic element. In Fig. 2, the bimetallic element 8 overlies a rebated aperture 6 in a metal plate 4. When the bimetallic member 8 is heated, e.g. by means of an adjacent electric heater, by r.f. induction heating or by irradiation with a beam of radiation admitted through an aperture 10 provided in the plate 4, the free end of the member 8 moves away from the plate 4 and a photocathode plate is manoeuvred into the aperture 6. On cooling the member 8 bears against the plate 4 and the inserted photocathode plate. A fixed retaining tag 7 overlies the opposite end of the aperture 6. The photoemissive coating is formed on the photocathode plate in a separate cell and the plate is subsequently passed into the tube envelope through the pumping stem which is then sealed off. In Fig. 4 a circular metal plate 11 with a circular rebated aperture 12 is used for mounting a dynode and the bimetallic element is a curved strip 14 carrying a tag 16 and anchored at one end by means of a bracket 15. For the purpose of r.f. induction heating the strip 14 may carry a metal flag.
