Abstract

1,167,477. Ionization counters. H. KIMMEL. 22 Aug., 1968 [13 Sept., 1967], No. 40227/68. Heading H1D. A radiation measuring device comprises a gasfilled chamber 1 having a window 6 for permitting radiation 5 to enter the chamber and an electrode 4 in said chamber, the window 6 being a fine-mesh grid with a large number of small holes therethrough, whereby radiation incident upon the window is not absorbed thereby but gas in the chamber is substantially impeded from passing out of the chamber via the window. Electrode 4 is insulated from the chamber 1 by insulators 3. The window grid 6 may be made of metal or plastics material. Gas is admitted through an orifice 2 to replace any lost through the window. The device may be used for measuring low energy radiation, e.g. that of tritium.
