In a vertical continuous metal, e.g. steel, casting process in which a cast strand 4 is deflected through an arcuate path into a horizontal direction, the molten core 204 is solidified into a non-porous homogeneous state within an arc A-B which subtends an angle up to 70 degrees, measured from a horizontal datum 11 passing through the centre of curvature of the arcuate path. The ferrostatic pressure of the molten metal overcomes internal friction to feed the solidifying core. The mould may be straight or curved axially and is reciprocated vertically or arcuately. The strand passes through a conveying and straightening machine 7.
