1,207,929. Improvements in or relating to high voltage cables. NEDERLANDSCHE KABELFABRIEKEN N.V. 9 Oct., 1969 [16 Oct., 1968], No. 49679/69. Heading H1A. A high voltage cable has one or more insulated conductors, and over the insulation is deposited a layer of material having a voltage dependent resistance characteristic, for example a lacquer containing silicon carbide, the whole being covered by a conducting sheath for electrostatic screening. When terminating the cable, to prevent excessive field concentrations at the surface of the insulation, it is only necessary to strip the sheath for a distance related to the voltage at which the cable will operate, and to make a simple connection to the voltage dependent resistance layers, whose characteristics ensure that voltage gradients large enough to cause surface discharges will not occur. The leakage path of the exposed layer can be increased by removing a part of it.
