Abstract
1,120,108. Termination of insulators. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 15 July, 1966 [26 July, 1965], No. 31808/66. Heading H2C. [Also in Division H1] In a method for insulating a high-potential electrical conductor 12 from a member 11 at earth potential by means of an interposed supporting insulator member 13, a layer of good conducting material 17 is provided on that part of the insulator in contact with an extension 18 of the conductor, and the junction between this part of the insulator and the conductor itself is made at a slot, or slots 16, such that the dielectric flux diverges to the walls of the slot and a lower voltage gradient at the junction of insulator and conductor results. The slot depth is at least equal to the slot width, and the slot or slots may be found in the conductor or in the insulator. The application of the invention to supporting the fixed contacts of a high-voltage sulphur-hexafluoride-blast circuit-breaker is described (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown).
