Abstract

A disconnectable pipe coupling, connecting brake &c. pipes of a tractor and trailer, in a system employing fluid at a pressure other than atmospheric pressure, comprises complementary male and female coupling elements which are guided one into another by means of a guide member on the female element, which is mounted on a resilient cantilever support permitting limited element movement in all directions from a central position. As shown in Fig. 1, the guide member constitutes a cone 35, and the cantilever support comprises a helical, conical spring 37 held in compression between the outer end of the female coupling element and a rigid mounting 36 on the tractor. The spring 37 can be replaced by an elastic mass with similar elastic properties. The male element 38, mounted on the trailer, enters the cone 35, centralizes the female element on compressing the spring 37, thus allowing freedom of movement of the female element by pushing a plate 45 away from the rigid mounting 36, see Fig. 2 (not shown), and presses against a valve 32 against the action of a valve spring, opening the valve, allowing fluid to pass through holes 40. The coupling is sealed by a rubber ring 41.
