Abstract

1,156,515. Pipe couplings. OERLIKONBUHRLE HOLDING A.G. 31 Aug., 1966 [1 Sept., 1965], No. 38912/66. Heading F2G. [Also in Divisions H1 and H2] A combination coupling for pneumatic and electric lines includes a piston which moves to complete the electrical contact in response to completion of the pneumatic connection. In the railway brake coupling shown air pipe 17 connects through a sealing ring 18 to a similar countercoupling (not shown). The couplings are connected by hand and incorporate a bayonet type fitting (Fig. 2, not shown). As the couplings are turned to engage the bayonet fitting, valve stems 19 abut to lift valve heads 22 clear of their seatings 21 against the action of springs 23. Pressurized air from the pipe 17 is thus allowed to enter a chamber 25 in each half of the coupling. The air forces a diaphragm 26 and inner and outer pistons 27, 38 downwardly against the action of a spring 33. Contact pins resiliently supported in a rubber plate 28 are forced through slits 36 in a rubber diaphragm 35 (provided to protect the contacts from dirt &c. when not in use) and engage end to end with corresponding contact pins which move upwardly in similar manner from the countercoupling, thus completing the electrical connection.
