Abstract

1,206,243. Explosive compositions. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 15 March, 1968 [20 March, 1967], No. 12713/68. Heading C1D. [Also in Division E1] Underground earth formations are fractured by detonating under pressure a slurry explosive composition which contains hollow glass particles of size 10 to 250 microns in an amount such that the density of the composition is from 1.0 to 1À5 g./c.c. The composition may also contain an inorganic oxidizing salt, a fuel, water, and a gelling agent. Suitable oxidizing agents are ammonium nitrate, sodium nitrate, calcium nitrate, and sodium and potassium perchlorate. The fuel may be particulate Al, Mg, Si, Fe, ferrosilicon, ferrophosphorus, alloys, nitrocellulose, carbon, vegetable products, hydrocarbon, fatty or vegetable oil, or urea. Suitable gelling agents and gum arabic, guar or karaya gum, polyacrylamide, and polyvinyl alcohol. Water-miscible organic liquids, e.g. methanol, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerol, and formamide, may also be present. The composition propagates more completely than similar compositions containing expanded polystyrene beads or whipped to provide air voids. The explosive may be used in opening up gas or oil wells.
