Abstract

1,206,022. Evacuated packages. MAHAFFY & HARDER ENG. CO. 23 Feb., 1968 [10 March, 1967], No. 9027/68. Heading B8C. An evacuated package, e.g. for bacon slices comprises a semi-rigid recessed shell with a thin flexible membrane sealed across the mouth and extending down inside the walls of the recess and being pressed against the bacon top and ends by atmospheric pressure. A membrane 22, which may have been preheated and prestretched beyond its shrinking limit to extend downwards in the areas which will be adjacent the contents' ends, is sealed to a flange 18 coplanar with and surrounding the mouth of the shell 10. The shell may be transparent and the film opaque. A lid 34 is sealed to the flanges 18 and has slots 36 along the edges of the faces 16 to allow the lid to slope inwards and thus aid stacking. It may also have a tab (not shown) to assist package opening. The opened package may be inverted and the shell hinged upwards about a weakening line (38), (Fig. 2, not shown) situated parallel to an edge of the mouth.
