Abstract

1,138,834. Package. E. S. & A. ROBINSON (HOLDINGS) Ltd. 4 Feb., 1966 [4 Feb., 1965], No. 4906/65. Heading B8C. A package comprises a plastics tray with an out-turned flange 10 which is enclosed in a tubular shell and sealed thereto. The tray is made from or coated with material resistant to fluids, grease &c. and has a flat base 8 or a base 34 with a raised central portion 35. The shell is formed from a blank of cardboard, fibrous sheet material, plastics sheet &c., and laminated with a heat-sealable coating particularly at the areas which are in contact with the flange 10. One panel 1, of the blank may be sealed to the flange of the tray before the shell is formed, or the tray may be inserted in the preformed shell. The shell may have lugs and/or angle-members 6 in its bottom to hold the tray in position or the tray bottom may be sealed to the shell. The top panel 1 has lines of perforations 7 to facilitate opening of the package or a perforated hole for insertion of a straw. The tray may have an integral spout and the panel 1 is then perforated to facilitate pouring. The edge panel 25 of the blank may be glued to the underside of the flange and the blank wrapped around the tray so that the top panel 21 is glued above the same flange. In one embodiment, a panel 26 has a tab 27 which fits into a slot 28 on a side panel 24. The panels 24, 26 are glued together but after the package has been opened they may be held together by means of the tab 27 and slot 28. The tray may be formed with multiple cavities or multiple pack's can be formed by a series of the trays previously described and a multiple shell. In an alternative embodiment the perforations are dispensed with and the whole top panel of the shell made peelable. The package can be heated in microwave ovens to heat the contents or may have a built-in heater.
