Abstract

1,128,799. Opening containers; packages. ANDERSON BROS. MFG. CO. 2 Aug., 1967 [24 Oct., 1966], No. 35482/67. Headings B8C and B8D. A shape-retaining container, substantially rectangular in plan and made of synthetic resin material, has an open top surrounded by flanges 32, 34, (36), (38), Fig. 1 (not shown), to which a flexible cover member 40 is sealed. A portion of flange 32 is adapted to be separated from the remainder of the container at a break line, indicated for example by notches (42), Fig. 1 (not shown), the cover member 40 remaining sealed to the separated flange portion whilst being peelable from part of the remainder of the flange to provide access to the contents, Fig. 6 (not shown). The container is adapted to be reclosed, and interfitting means 52, 48 are provided on the flange 32 and on the corresponding side wall 22 of the container respectively. These interfitting means may take the form of one or more protuberances to be fitted into a corresponding slot or slots, as shown, or they may be constituted by a hook and opening, Figs. 11-12 (not shown). The interfitting means may be engaged prior to the severing of the portion of the flange 32, this flange being bendable at the break line and at a line 55. When the container is reclosed after opening, the cover member 40, which may be a stretchable sheet, is held taut since a gap is formed between the edges previously constituting the break line due to the resilience of flange 32 and the inward inclination of side wall 22. In a modification, Figs. 8-10 (not shown), both interfitting means are located on the flange 32.
