Abstract

1,205,969. Securing railway rails. B. F. GOODRICH CO. 22 Dec., 1967 [27 Dec., 1966], No. 68443/68. Heading E1G. A flange-footed rail 10 is clamped against an elastomeric pad 11 by pairs of arms 20 loaded by elastomeric tension springs 22, the springs 22 being mounted in housings 13 on a plate 12 bolted to a sleeper 15, and the arms 20 being removably mounted on the ends of shafts 21 protruding from the housings. As shown each elastomeric spring comprises a tube bonded to the shaft 21 and to a thin shell 23 keyed in the housing 13. In a modification the cylindrical housings are replaced by square-section housings integral with the plate 12 and the tubular springs 22 are replaced by pairs of elastomeric strips engaging polygonal shafts. Lateral movement is limited either positively - e.g. by fixed stops 19, or by appropriately shaping the housings 13 - or resiliently by depending lugs on the arms 20. The latter construction electrically insulates the rail from the plate 12, and if desired the pad 11 may then be extended up and over the housings 13 to prevent electrical shorting by foreign objects lying between the rail and housings.
