Abstract

1,205,762. Unsaturated alcohols. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 13 May, 1968 [26 May, 1967], No. 24524/67. Heading C2C. Unsaturated primary alcohols are prepared by reacting an olefin which shows chain branching at the double bond with gaseous formaldehyde in the presence of water and some but less than 0.1 moles per mole of formaldehyde of a zinc halide, stannic halide or silicon tetrahalide at a temperature between 0‹ and 120‹ C. 2-Ethylhexene-1 is used as starting material in the examples, giving unsaturated C 9 alcohol as product.
