[Also in Division C2] Cotelomers of styrene and semi-esters of maleic acid having a M.W. within the range of from 500 to 2000 are obtained by telomerizing 40 to 80 mole per cent of styrene with 60 to 20 mole per cent of at least one semi-ester of maleic acid and a (C 1 -C 10 ) aliphatic or cycloaliphatic primary or secondary alcohol, the carbon chain of which may be interrupted by 1 to 4 oxygen atoms, in the presence of a (C 1 -C 10 ) aliphatic or cycloaliphatic primary or secondary alcohol the carbon chain of which may be interrupted by 1 to 4 oxygen atoms, the molar ratio of alcohol to monomers being within the range of from 5 : 1 to 1 : 5, and 0À05 to 10% by wt., calculated on the monomers, of a free radical forming initiator at a temperature within the range of from 65‹ to 180‹ C. Examples are given for the production of the compounds.
