1466287 Poly-α-hydroxyacrylic acid salts SOLVAY & CIE 17 July 1974 [18 July 1973] 31661/74 Heading C3P [Also in Division C2] Water-soluble salts of poly-α-hydroxyacrylic acid (or a #-C 1-3 alkyl derivative thereof) are prepared by (1) converting α,#-dichloro-propionic acid (or #-C 1-3 alkyl derivative thereof) into the corresponding α-chloro-acrylic acid by thermal dehydrochlorination in the gas phase in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. calcined alumina; (2) condensing the product and polymerizing it in water in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. potassium persulphate; and (3) reacting the polymeric product with aqueous alkali metal or ammonium hydroxide.
