1,201,270. Imidazole derivatives. MERCK & CO. Inc. 22 Dec., 1967 [6 Jan., 1967], No. 42715/69. Divided out of 1,201,269. Heading C2C. The invention comprises the novel imidazole derivatives of the formula wherein R is C 1-3 alkyl and a process for their preparation and the preparation of 2-hydroxymethyl - 4(5) - nitroimidazole by hydrolysing the corresponding 2 - (1 - chloroalkyl) - 4(5) - nitroimidazole and 2 - chloromethyl - 4(5)- nitroimidazole respectively.
