Abstract

1,197,971. Unsaturated alcohols. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 13 March, 1968 [30 March, 1967], No. 14472/67. Heading C2C. Unsaturated primary alcohols are prepared by reacting an olefin which shows chain branching at the double bond with gaseous, anhydrous formaldehyde in the presence of between 0.001 and 0.01 moles per mole of formaldehyde of a zinc halide, stannic halide or silicon tetrahalide at a temperature between 0‹ and 150‹ C. The reaction may be carried out in presence of an anhydrous inert solvent e.g. a chlorinated hydrocarbon, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride or 2-dichloroethane. Olefins used as starting materials in the examples are 2-ethylhexene-1, 2- methylpentene-2, isobutene and 2-methylpentene-1.
