Abstract

1,204,819. Adhesive composition. BORDEN CHEMICAL CO. (U.K.) Ltd. 13 Nov., 1968 [20 Nov., 1967 (2)], No. 53950/68. Heading C3P. An adhesive composition curable under acid conditions, comprises (1) a vinyl acetate polymer, (2) an acidic curing agent and (3) an N- hydroxymethyl reactive compound cross-linkable with the polymer, such as a polyalkanol or polyalkoxyalkyl diazine, triazine, tetrazine, imidazolidinone or thioimidazolidinone. A curing inhibitor, such as methanol, and a phenolic resin cross-linkable with the polymer, may be present. In the examples, a copolymer of vinyl acetate and acrylic acid is mixed with a phenol-formaldehyde resole, and hexamethoxymethyl melamine, 1,3-bis(hydroxymethyl-4,5- dihydroxy - 2 - imidazolidinone, tetramethoxymethyl benzoguanamine, tetramethylol benzoguanamine, tetrahydro - 3,5 - bis(methoxymethyl) - 4H - 1,3,5 - oxadiazin - 4 - one, tetramethylolurea, trimethoxymethyl melamine or hexaethoxymethyl melamine, and the mixture cured using as a curing catalyst p-toluene sulphonic acid, chromium nitrate, or zirconyloxychloride. Methanol and other alcohols are used to function as curing inhibitors. The adhesive composition is used to bond wood.
