Abstract

1,266,688. Thermally curable adhesives. COURTAULDS Ltd. 24 July, 1969 [25 July, 1968], No. 35472/68. Heading C3B. A thermally curable adhesive comprises an intimate powder mixture of a copolymeric nylon, a polyepoxide, and an activator for initiating cure or heating. The copolymeric nylon bears H atoms attached directly to at least some of the amide N atoms; it may comprise (E) a methoxylated nylon 6/66 copolymer, which may be mixed with (F) nylon 6/66 copolymer so that by wt. (E) : (F) = 1 : 2. The polyepoxide may contain an epoxy group embodying a CH 2 group; it may comprise, e.g., resorcinol diglycidyl ether or 2,2-bis-(2,3-epoxy-propoxyphenyl) propane; the polyepoxide may also be formed from novolak or resole resins. 20-30% wt. polyepoxide may be used. The activator may be dicyanodiamide, e.g. 2-5% wt. based on polyepoxide. Use.-Surfaces, e.g. steel strips, may be bonded by sprinkling the adhesive powder between the surfaces, which may have been primed with alcoholic or neat epoxy resin, placing the surfaces together, preferably clamping, and heating to 130‹ C., e.g. 180‹ C., to cure.
