Abstract

1,178,367. Epoxy resin compositions. UNITED STATES STEEL CORP. 18 April, 1968 [26 April, 1967], No. 18442/68. Heading C3B. An epoxy resin adhesive comprises: 15-60% by wt. of a glycidyl polyether of a dihydric phenol; 25-70% by weight of a filler (e.g. calc, silica, dolomite, anhydrous CaSO 4 or aluminium silicate); 1-7% by wt. of a flexibilizer chosen from polyvinyl methyl ether, rosin ester, solid polyamide resin or a butadienestyrene copolymer; the composition is cured with a mixture of a flexibilizing amine hardener which has a straight chain of 3-10 carbon groups with 2 to 5 carbon atoms per group, an ether link between the groups and an amine group on each end of the chain (e.g. and a rigidifying tertiary amine catalyst, e.g. tris - (dimethylaminomethyl) phenol. The hardener is employed in approximately stoichiometric amounts and comprises 70-50% of hardener and 30-50% of catalyst. The composition may also contain a coal tar fraction having a boiling point of 500-900‹ F. in an amount of 20-40% by wt. of the composition.
