Abstract

1,203,939. Reconstituted tobacco. GENERAL CIGAR CO. Inc. 28 Nov., 1967 [1 Dec., 1966], No. 54101/67. Heading A2C. Reconstituted tobacco sheets, of appreciable wet strength for use as cigar wrapper material, are made by combining comminuted tobacco with a minor weight proportion of a water-insoluble cellulose derivative dissolved in aqueous organic acid of not less than 15% by weight of organic acid content, and converting the mixture with drying into sheets, said organic acid being miscible with water and substantially volatile at the temperature used for drying. Suitable cellulose derivatives include water-insoluble forms of methyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, ethyl methyl cellulose and celluose acetate, and water-soluble forms of methyl cellulose and hydroxy ethyl cellulose rendered waterinsoluble by acetylation. Water-soluble methyl cellulose may be additionally included. The preferred organic acids are acetic and formic acids. Dry ground cigar type tobaccos are used, optionally with the addition of one or more of tobacco fibres produced from stems and other waste tobacco, cellulose fibres derived from softwood pulp, ceramic fibres, and titanium dioxide. The organic acid may be a mixture comprising predominantly formic or acetic acid and a minor proportion of a less volatile acid such as propionic acid. A minor proportion of a non-volatile or substantially non-volatile acid, such as malic, tartaric lactic and citric acids, may be included, which acid also serves as a plasticizer for the tobacco sheet.
