Abstract
1413271 Smoking mixtures LIGGETT & MYERS INC 12 Feb 1974 [26 March 1973] 06370/74 Heading A2C A smoking composition comprises tobacco and between 0.001% and 0.06% by weight of finely divided unsupported palladium or palladium salts decomposable into metallic Pd, whose purpose is to decrease the yield of polycyclic aromatic compounds when the tobacco burns. Preferably the Pd is finer than 100 mesh U.S. sieve and is dispensed uniformly throughout the tobacco. One method of manufacture is to dry blend Pd, ground tobacco, a fibrous material and a binder. The fibrous material may be α-cellulose and the binder sodium carboxymethyl cellulose. Alternatively tobacco sheets may be made from a wet blending procedure using glycerin and propylene glycol. Examples compare the yields of polycyclic aromatic compounds from natural and artificial preparations.
