Abstract
To render smoking tobacco carcinogenically inactive by reducing the benz-pyrene content of smoke therefrom, a metallic catalyst consisting of platinum, palladium, rhodium, osmium, iridium and/or ruthenium, or an alloy or alloys of two or more of these metals, is dusted on the tobacco, or it is impregnated with a solution of a chlorine-free water-soluble material or materials capable on heating of forming such a catalyst, e.g. the tobacco is dipped in or sprayed with platinum di-amino nitrite dissolved in water. About 0,1% by weight of metal based on the dry tobacco weight is used. Ether is mentioned as an alternative solvent, and other catalyst-forming materials specified are (1) Platino nitrate or nitrite of sodium, potassium or ammonia, (2) Hexamine platino nitrate or nitrite, (3) Hexa-hydroxy platinate of sodium, potassium or ammonia, (4) Platinum animo-nitrates or nitrites of sodium, potassium of ammonia, (5) Platinum ammino or amine nitrates or nitrites, (6) the corresponding compounds to (1) .... (5) of the other metals referred to above.
