[Also in Divisions F1 and H1] An automatic switch and valve device connectible in flow series with a pump 2, e.g. for use with gas-operated instantaneous water heaters, comprises a water inlet 8 and an outlet. When water is withdrawn from the outlet, e.g. via a tap, the fall in pressure in a chamber 6 causes a diaphragm 9 to move to the right to close a switch 29 and thereby start the driving motor (not shown) of the pump. Operation of the pump rapidly increases the pressure difference across the diaphragm which therefore moves to its limit position wherein a perforated cylinder 13 abuts the adjacent one of a pair of flanges 15. Moreover, a spring-controlled valve 18 opens to permit inlet water to flow to the pump. A safety hole 21 in the valve prevents the creation of a pressure difference across the diaphragm when only a small amount of water is withdrawn, e.g. due to a leaking tap. At least some of the components may be of plastics material.
