Abstract

[Also in Division H4] A distress signalling device comprises a casing 1 containing a balloon 3, inflating means 4 and a line 8 connecting the balloon 3 to the casing 1. When released from the easing by action of a pyrotechnic device 9, the balloon is inflated. As described, the balloon is released by an explosive charge 12 operated by a fuse 16, ignited by device 9, on contact with sea water. A bottle 4 of helium or hydrogen is arranged to release its contents into the balloon 3 by means of a spring-urged pin piercing a diaphragm. The casing 1 then acts as an anchor for the lower end of the line 8 whilst the cylinder 6 acts as a radar reflector. A battery operated lamp 7 includes a switch actuated by tension on the line 8 such that the combined effect of sea and wind causes the lamp 7 to flash. The balloon 3 may be metallized to act as an additional radar reflector.
