850,550. Life-lines, marine signalling devices. SCHERMULY PISTOL ROCKET APPARATUS Ltd. April 9, 1959 [April 25, 1958], No. 13171/58. Classes 9(2) and 77. A buoyant line 1 carries smoke and/or illuminating flare devices 3 each comprising means responsive to tensioning of the line for igniting or initiating ignition of the signal-producing material. The line may be attached to a ship 2, an inflatable dinghy or a buoy and each device comprises a tube 6, Fig. 3, having a container 10 for flare material 18 and an ignitible powder 19. Ignition is effected by an electrical igniter 22 connected by leads 21 to an electric cell 20 housed in a space 11 within the tube 6 and activated by seawater which floods the space when plugs 27, 26 - normally sealing respective apertures 28, 25 - are removed by tensioning of the line between the device line attachment ring 29 and the point 30 at which the rope 31 connecting the plugs is secured to the line. The pressure produced by the burning material 18 breaks a frangible disc 9 covering an aperture 8 through which the flare gases issue. In a modified device, a friction igniter, adapted to be actuated by tightening of the line, replaces the cell and igniter 22.
