Abstract

1277573 Marine smoke-signal devices PAINS WESSEX Ltd 27 May 1969 [31 May 1968] 26370/68 Heading F3A A marine, smoke-signal device comprises an aluminium casing 1, Fig. 1, mounted in a float 7, an igniter 19 for a smoke generating composition 2, a smoke baffle 21, 24, a closure cap 5 provided with a line of weakness 39, and a cord 28 which passes in a water-tight manner through a plastics membrane 27 and connects the cap 5 to the igniter light bulbs 40, associated with water-activated cells 41, are carried by the float. The igniter comprises two friction devices, or as shown in Fig. 2, two percussion devices comprising a spring-loaded striker 32 locked in engagement with a bar 33 by balls 34. In use, the cap 5 is fastened to a fixed object and the signal device moved relative thereto so as to rupture the cap at 39 and provide a smoke outlet. Continued movement tensions the cord 28 which, in turn, pulls the striker 32, until the balls 34 drops through holes 37. The released striker then penetrates a percussion cap 23. Further movement of the signal device causes the cord 28 to be completely withdrawn thus discontinuing the connection with the fixed part. Cords 44 withdraw plugs 43 in order to enable water to enter the cells 41.
