Abstract

1,201,980. Lamps. M. C. BERGER. 24 Dec., 1968, No. 61446/68. Heading F4R. A lamp adapted to emit a beam of variable colour comprises a casing 3 containing at least two light sources 4, 5 producing orthogonal beams of different colours and a dichroic filter or half-silvered mirror 8 bisecting the angle between the beams so that light from either or both of the sources is projected through a fresnel lens 12. The sources may have respective coloured filters 6, 7 or may consist of coloured bulbs, and current is supplied to the sources by a rotary switch 15 driven by a synchronous motor 16. The lamp is suitable as a traffic or pedestrian signal, the main beams being red and green, respectively, and the combined beam being orange or yellow and cf an intensity double that of the constituent beams. Cut-out letters 13 forming the word "STOP" are illuminated by the bulb 5 through a red filter 14. In a modification (Fig. 8, not shown) a third (blue) source (51) is located opposite the source (5) and a second dichroic filter or half-silvered mirror (53) is disposed perpendicular to the filter (8), the two filters being so constructed that light from any one of the sources or any combination thereof can be emitted. The filter (53) is made in two parts which are secured by adhesive to opposite sides of the filter (8), and a ground glass screen (56) is fitted adjacent the lens (12). The dichroic filters may consist of transparent plates coated with molybdenum or cobalt.
