A stone-gathering machine comprises a frame 46, a tray 32 and apron 31 mounted on the frame, a large elevating wheel 12 and a series of tines 20 arranged obliquely to the line of travel. The large elevating wheel 12 has a series of spaced divisions and a shuttering member 11 attached to the frame 46 and extending part way round the rim 14 of the wheel to form pockets with the spaced divisions on the upward traverse of the wheel. A guide plate 16 is hinged at 15 to the shuttering member and a tine extension plate 22 is hinged at 21 to the last tine. A telescopic pressure member 25 comprising compression spring 26 and adjustment screw 27 is attached at one end to the frame and at the other to the tine extension plate 22 urging it against the guide plate 16 but allowing both the guide plate 16 and tine extension plate 22 to swing backwards to a release position on encountering a large stone. A knocker bar 33 pivoted to the main frame 46 engages with a pin 34 on rim 14 of the wheel 12. The other end carries a roller 36 which engages beneath lever arm 37 on the apron axle 38 and is coupled via pull bar 38, lever arm 40, post 41 and push bar 42 to a control lever 43 which operates a clutch, which in turn slides the pull bar backwards or forwards in its pivotal bearings thus moving the knocker bar 33 into or out of register with pin 34. The machine frame 46 also carries elevating rams 43 for lifting and tilting the tray 32.
