Crops, in particular root crops, are lifted from storage clamps &c. by two sets of tines 5 extending through a plurality of discharge guides 8 and rotatably driven from an initial position to extend horizontally beneath the crops and then to lift the same for discharge to an endless scraper elevator. The tines are pivotally attached to a frame 4 rotatably mounted in a body 1 and each has support roller 6 and a further roller 39. From the initial position shown, in which the roller 6 is in engagement with a sprung guide 44, the roller 39, on rotation of the frame 4, abuts a stationary cam 23 whereby to force the tines 5 underneath the crops. The roller 6 simultaneously engages a curved guide 45. As the frame continues to rotate the tines firstly penetrate further beneath the crop, as the roller 6 passes over section 50 of the guide 45 and secondly lift the crops as the said roller 6 passes over section 51 of the guide 45. An abutment 40 adjacent the uppermost position of the tines, stops the movement of the tines, which thereby discharge their load on to a rearwardly sloping portion of the guides 8, and forces the roller 6 into engagement with a spring-mounted horseshoe shaped reversing member 7. The continued rotation of the frame 4 in combination with the reversing member 7 reverses the direction of the tines and withdraws them within the guides 8 and thus to their initial position. The apparatus is mounted on the rear of a tractor, Fig. 8 (not shown), is raisable thereby for transportation purposes and has adjustable side plate (9), (11) to guide the crops to the tines 5. Conventional land wheels (15) and cleaning apparatus (59), Fig. 7 (not shown), are also attached to the lifting apparatus.
