An arresting device for an anchor chain 3 comprises a pair of double-armed retaining levers 4, 5 pivotally movable through a system of shackles 7, 8 and 12, 13 to grip and release the chain, the coupling shaft 14 of the shackles 7, 8 being,vertically movable by a driven screw 18 threadedly received in a shaft 15 coupling the shackles 12, 13. Since the lower end of shackle 13 is pivoted at 17 to the arrester body 16 and the upper end of the shackle 12 is pivoted to the coupling shaft 14, movement of the shaft 15 to the left along the screw 18 moves the shaft 14 upwardly whereupon the levers 4, 5 are pivoted to grip the horizontal link 6 of the chain 3 against an arrester plate 1, stops 11 on the shackles 7, 8 restricting the opening angle of the same. The shackle 8 engages an elongated slot 10 in the retaining lever 5 through a slide part 9 which slides up the slot 10 to cause further pivoting of the levers 45 if the links 6 of the chain are reduced in size e.g. due to wear.
