Abstract

369,324. Shoots; trimming and spreading apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and MARSHALL, C. H., Fraser & Chalmers Engineering Works, Erith, Kent. Jan. 28, 1931, No. 2802. [Classes 78 (i) and 78 (iv).] In apparatus for handling granular or lumpy material of the kind comprising a shoot 2, means 1 for feeding material into the shoot, and a belt conveyer 23 adapted to discharge material from either end, the shoot and the feeding means are made telescopic. The feeding device is in three parts 5, 6, 7 which are of square cross section. The part 5 is fixed to the hopper 1 and carries a pair of guide rollers 8 which engage girders 9 connected by a rope 11 to a winch. The part 7 is fixed to the girders, and when the girders are raised, this part slides over the part 6 until a flange 12 on it comes into engagement with a corresponding flange on the part 6, whereupon the parts move together over the part 5. The shoot 2 is composed of three telescopic parts 14, 15, 16 of square cross section of which the part 14 is pivoted at 17 to the girders 9, and the part 16 is supported by rods 18 connected to an eyebolt 20 through which a crane sling can be passed. The belt 23 is driven in either direction through one of the pulleys 25 by an electric motor 27 mounted on the part 16. Sliding gates 29 regulate the flow of material from the shoot to the conveyer. Either gate may be opened independently of the other by rack- and-pinion mechanism. A pressure plate may be incorporated in the shoot near its mouth and arranged to actuate a switch controlling the motor 27 in order that when the material sinks below a predetermined level,. the conveyer shall be stopped. The sliding gates may be replaced by a single pivoted gate which can be swung from one side to the other according to the direction of discharge required.
