A releasable latch for use with a movable part of mechanical equipment, said part having a bar 18 for engagement with the latch, comprises, in combination, an anchorage member 10 having a recess 24 in which the bar is receivable, and having a guideway 28 which meets said recess, a slide bolt 30, movable in said guideway between advanced and retracted positions and having a latching end portion 32 which is disposed in and removed from said recess respectively for said positions, thereby to retain said bar in and release it from the recess, spring means 34 biasing the slide bolt to its advanced position, and manually-operable cam means acting on the anchorage member and slide bolt, for retracting the latter against the action of said spring means, said anchorage member comprising a flat base 12 for mounting it on said equipment and a block 26 disposed on said base at right angles thereto, said block having in it the said recess, guideway and slide bolt, said guideway and slide bolt being substantially parallel to the base, said recess facing in a direction away from and substantially normal to the base, said manually operable cam means comprising an arm 42 pivotally connected to the slide bolt, said arm having a cam portion 48 engaged with the block to effect actuation of the slide bolt, said arm having a pair of projecting lugs 10, 51 disposed respectively at the ends of the cam portion and engageable respectively with opposite sides of the block to constitute stops for limiting movements of the arm, said cam arm having a bifurcated portion 46, said slide bolt extending between and being connected to the bifurcated portion of the cam arm, said block having a pair of spaced, projecting guide lugs 12 extending on opposite sides of the cam arm, said lugs constituting guides for the arm, the cam arm including an elongate projecting finger piece 54, said arm and finger piece occupying latching and releasing positions which are approximately 90‹ apart, said finger piece extending either generally parallel or perpendicular to the axis of the slide bolt. The anchorage member, as shown includes a collar 38 secured in its guideway, the cam portion of the cam arm engaging one end of said collar, and the spring means engaging the other end of said collar.
