A strap tensioning, connecting and cutting tool comprises a handlever 4 disengageably coupled to operate a tensioning and gripping means 11: while the coupling engages, the range of travel of the handlever is restricted by a stop 27, but at a predetermined tension in the tape 8 the coupling automatically disengages at 15, 17, the stop is no longer effective and the handlever may move beyond the restricted portion of its range of travel to actuate a locking arrangement 6, 9 to connect the tape ends and thereafter a blade (35), Fig. 4 (not shown), to cut the tape. To tension the tape the handlever 4 is rotated in the direction of the arrow about a pin 3, a projecting pin 26 causing a rocker arm 18 to rotate clockwise about a pin 19 until a shoulder 28 of the drawing bar 12 engages a stop 27 on the tool body. The movement of the drawing bar 12 slides the pin 13 to the right and thus the device 11 is also moved in a direction to tension the tape as illustrated in Fig. 2 (not shown). Subsequent release of the handlever 4 allows the tool elements to resume their positions as shown in Fig. 1 under the influence of springs 22, 43 and the tape 8, which is held by the stop 10, slides to the right relative to the device 11. The handlever action is repeated as many times as necessary to increase the tension in the tape. A pin 15 in the drawing bar 12 rests against a flank 16 of a cut out edge 17 in the rocker arm 18 until the force acting on the pin along the flank due to the tape tension exceeds that due to the spring 23, when the pin slides out of the recess and on to the edge 20 of the arm, Fig. 3 (not shown), the pin being rotatable to minimize friction. The tension in the spring 23 is previously set by an adjusting screw 24. The handle 4 is now disengaged from the device 11 and may move further to the right than possible before due to the engagement of the drawing bar 12 with the stop 27. A pin 31 on the hand lever 4 now engages the end 32 of an arm (34), as illustrated in Fig. 3 (not shown), which it rotates about a pin 33 secured to the tool body until a projection (36) on the arm pushes a pin 9 into the lock 6 to connect the tape ends, the arm engages a projection 41 on a lever 40 to free the stopping device 10 from the tape to relieve it of tension, and finally the blade (35) cuts the tape.
