Abstract

1,031,684. Strapping bundles &c. PANDUIT CORPORATION. March 7, 1963 [March 8, 1962], No. 9077/63. Heading F2G. A tool for tensioning a strap comprises two jaw members 7, 8 joined together to provide relative movement between them, the first jaw member having means 2a to restrain movement of one end of the strap, the second jaw member having means 17 for gripping the other end of the strap, the relative movement in one direction between the jaw members covering the strap to be tensioned, a shear blade 11 mounted for movement adjacent the jaw member 7, an actuator for the blade 11 and bias means 27, 28 to prevent the actuator from actuating the blade until a predetermined tension is reached in the strap. The end of the strap of which the movement is restrained has a sleeve 2a which restrains it, as disclosed in Specification 989,984. The binding strap 2 is passed around the bundle 3 to be strapped, through a passage formed between two walls at the end of the jaw member 7, through a recess 16 in the jaw member 8 and across a toothed gripper 17 which is biased by a spring 19 to turn about a pivot 18 towards the jaw member 7 but held back, when the jaw members are together, by a projection 31 from the jaw member 7. The jaw members extend to handles 4. 5 and are pivoted together by a pin which also passes with clearance through a shear blade actuator having teeth 24a. This shear blade actuator is held in a recess 21 in the jaw member 8 and has a screw-threaded end which passes through two yokes 25, 26. A nut 29 on the threaded end of the actuator 24 adjusts the compressive force of springs which tends to keep the actuator in a position in which teeth 24a on the end thereof are disengaged from teeth 11a on the lower portion of the shear blade 11. When the handles 4, 5 are moved towards one another the projection 31 moves away from the gripper 17 which rotates so that its teeth 17a grip the strap end 2b, which is pulled, as the handles 4, 5 continue to converge, so that the strap 2 is tightened around the bundle 3. When the strap is tensioned to a degree corresponding to the bias provided by the springs the shear blade actuator is caused to be moved towards the shear blade 11 and the teeth 11a thereon are engaged by the teeth 24a and, as the handle movement continues, the actuator 24, which is rigid with the handle 5, pivots on its pin and raises the shear blade 11.
