Abstract
1,200,664. Crucible furnaces. WALES FLUID POWER Ltd. 26 July, 1968 [22 May, 1967], No. 23733/67. Heading F4B. [Also in Division F1] In a die-casting furnace which comprises within a refractory-lined metal casing 3 a non- metallic crucible 4, the furnace casing includes an aperture 11 adapted to receive the furnace burner or burners (12, Fig. 2), which burners are interconnected with a sealing cover 15, and a flue exit 18 adapted to be automatically sealed through the action of compressed air operating a piston and cylinder 20, the seal for the flue exit 18 being arranged to operate in conjunction with the burner or burners 12 so that when the burners 12 are withdrawn from the furnace, the flue 18 is automatically sealed. The furnace also includes a top-plate 22 through which extends an injection tube 23, a thermocouple 25, and an inlet 26 connected to the source of pressure application to the furnace. In operation, when the burners 12 are removed from the furnace, the burner aperture 11 and flue 18 sealed, air pressure is admitted to the furnace, causing metal in the crucible to feed up the injection tube 23 into a die or dies positioned over same.
