Abstract

882,745. Furnace walls. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. March 29, 1960 [March 31, 1959], No. 11046/60. Class 51 (1). The conduction space of a furnace is defined by stacked wall elements 1, Fig. 2, each of which comprises a closed metal circumferential wall 7, Fig. 4, having strengthening ribs (not shown), and which has an inner lining of refractory material 8 and open parallel end faces. The elements are stacked in self-supporting relation so that the total weight of the wall, a roof 3 having an exhaust aperture 4, and pipes 5 for heating a liquid which are attached to the wall and/or roof by means 6, is carried by the bottom element without external framework. Superposed elements are secured together by bolts 11 passing through flanges 10 on the end faces of the elements and the end faces 12 of adjacent linings are made of a tapering or stepped design having a suitable sealing material 13 therebetween.
