At least one tunnel burner 1 is surrounded by a fluid-tight casing 3 mounted in a fur nace wall 10 so that one side 9 of the casing forms part of the inner surface of the furnace wall, and cooling fluid is passed through the casing. In a furnace for heating a con tinuously moving strip 8, a number of burners 1, each having a meta jacket to the burner proper, are mounted in a metal casing 3 by welding the burner jackets to the casing. A water-cooled casing 3 with burners 1 is mounted on either side of the strip 8, so that when the strip is stationary, and the fuel supply to the burners cut off, the strip is not overheated by radiation from the heated furnace walls.
