Abstract

A screen printing machine comprises a stencil carrier 9 movable horizontally in a machine frame 1 to a position above an article to be printed, a carrier 11 for a squeegee 12, said carrier 11 also being mounted for horizontal movement, means for coupling the carriers 9, 11 together for initial conjoint movement, and means for releasing the coupling when the screen on the carrier 9 engages the article to be printed. Horizontal guides 8 and 10 are provided for the carriers 11 and 9 respectively. The carrier 9 in operation is moved from right to left, Fig. 1 (not shown), and when an abutment member (9a) on the carrier 9 engages an ear (16a) the carrier 11 is moved with the carrier 9 until a lug (16b) engages a stop 17 and causes the ear (16a) and the member (9a) to become disengaged since the member (16) supporting the ear is displaced. At this point the carrier 11 is locked by the lug (16b), the bottom of the squeegee is top dead centre of the article to be printed, and the screen is resiliently urged into contact with the article to be printed. The frame 9 moves further to the left with the squeegee stationary and ink is forced through the screen on to the article. The article may be cylindrical, Fig. 2 (not shown), or flat, Fig. 5 (not shown). If cylindrical, the article is rotated by the frame movement during printing and is supported on an adjustable table 2 having end webs provided with a pair of rollers (2a), (2b). When flat articles are printed the support is modified by the provision of a slide (18a), Fig. 5 (not shown), which provides access to the articles after printing &c. The squeegee is raised on the return stroke by means including pivoted pins 24, 25 clamped to the spindle 13 of the squeegee and a cam follower (29), Fig. 4 (not shown), which co-operates with a cam surface (42). A follower 30 engages a groove (46) to return the squeegee to its operative position.
