Writing device having a stationary frame, a support roller or platen rotationally mounted in said frame and fixed laterally to it, and writing means defining a writing station with respect to the roller, the forming means writing mounted on a side-movable carriage, said device characterized by means for moving the carriage laterally in order to move said writing-forming means laterally with respect to the roller; said means of moving comprising: a ratchet member operatively connected to the carriage; a rectilinear and many-toothed rack member, which has little mass with respect to the carriage and is mounted with support on said frame, with a limited lateral relative movement thereto; spring means predisposing said ratchet member in the sense of said cooperative application or connection with the teeth of said rack, preventing the relative movement between both in one direction during the application of the ratchet member thereto, while it allows movement between them in the opposite direction, independently of the application of said ratchet member; energy carrier means operatively connected to the carriage and which tend to move the carriage and said ratchet member in the first of said cited senses, with respect to said rack; means for disconnecting said ratchet member from said rack for a certain period, allowing the movement of said ratchet member in said first direction by the action of said energy carrying means; elastic biasing means connected to said rack to position said rack normally at one of the limits of its lateral movement with respect to the frame; activating means selectively operable and connected with movement transmission to said rack to move it in opposition to said elastic predisposition means; said activating means including means for abruptly discharging said rack allowing the movement thereof in said opposite direction with respect to said ratchet member under the influence of said elastic predisposition means.
