A chain stitch sewing machine comprises a looper carrier and a bell crank lever pivoted on a support, a first eccentric connected by a linkage to one arm of the bellcrank lever and a link connecting the second arm of the bell crank lever to the looper carrier for imparting loop seizing and shedding movements to the looper, and a second eccentric operatively connected to the carrier for imparting needle avoiding movements to the looper. A carrier 24, pivoted on a pin 25 rigid with a fixed bracket 26, carries pivot pins 42, 45. A bell crank lever 38, pivoted on pin 42, has one arm 39 connected by a link 43 to a looper carrier 46 which carries a looper 47 and is pivoted on pin 45. An eccentric 32, mounted on a shaft 31 coupled by gears 29, 30 to the bed shaft 6, is connected by linkage 34 to the ball end of a rod 36 axially slidable in the other arm 37 of bell crank lever 38 and adjustably fixed therein by a clamping screw 40, to impart loop seizing and shedding movements to looper 47. An eccentric 21 on shaft 6 is coupled by a link 22 to a crank arm 23 on support 24 for imparting needle avoiding movements to looper 47. Shaft 6 is connected by eccentric means 14 to a shaft 9 for oscillating the latter. Shaft 9 is rigid with a bracket 7 coupled to feed dogs 8, and is connected by a link 16 to a shaft 3 carrying a crank arm 5 pivoted to a gate 4 slidably supporting the needle bar 17 carrying three needles 18 cooperating with looper 47.
