Abstract

938,504. Sewing; sewing machines. P. H. ESPINOSA, and F. D. FRIAS. April 19, 1960, No. 13575/60. Class 112. In a machine adapted to perform free loop stitching or tufting simultaneously along adjacent lines from opposite sides of a base fabric, the upper and lower needles reciprocate parallel with one another and are spaced transversely of the line of stitching, and loops in adjacent lines of stitching are staggered relatively to one another. The machine, as shown, joins together a pair of superposed fabrics 201, 202 by two adjacent lines 203, 204 of freeloop stitching. The stitches follow a predetermined pattern line, and the fabrics are subsequently separated to provide a thread-marked pattern on each fabric. The machine comprises an upper body 101 and a lower body 102 fastened together by screws 103. A cover 104 is fastened to the upper body by a screw 105. A lower shaft 106, driven by a pulley 122, is coupled by a belt 107 to an upper shaft 108. A lower needle bar 115, slidable in a sleeve 127 and carrying an upwardly directed needle 117, is coupled by a connecting rod 113 to a crank-pin 111 carried by shaft 106. An upper needle bar 116, slidable in a sleeve 133 and carrying a downwardly-directed needle 118, is coupled by a connecting rod 114 to a crank-pin 112 carried by shaft 108. A reciprocating lower looper 119, co-operating with -needle 118, is secured by a screw 163 to a slidable block 162 coupled by a connecting rod 161 to a swinging arm 155 which carries a follower pin co-operating with a cam 153 on shaft 156. An upper looper 120, co-operating with needle 117, is secured by a screw 174 to a vertical bar 173 having a laterally-projecting bracket journalled on the presser bar 135 and pressed against a block 139 on the latter by the presser bar spring 138. Bar 173 is coupled by a link 171 to a swinging arm 166 carrying a follower pin 165 co-operating with a cam 164 on shaft 108, rotation of which thereby serves to oscillate bar 173 about the axis of the presser bar 135. Raising of the latter, either by a hand lever 140 acting on block 139, or by a pedal-actuated linkage 142, 143, 146 acting on block 139, also serves to raise the looper 120. A cam 148 on shaft 106 co-operates with a follower pin 149 on the lower arm of a twoarmed lever 150 for oscillating the latter. The upper arm carries a thread pull-off member 152 positioned between the thread tensioner 191 and the needles. The work support plate comprises a main portion secured to the base 102 by screws, and a front portion in the form of a flap which pivots upwardly, against spring bias, to give access to the lower needle. The feed dog 121 is fixed by a screw 190 to a feed bar 188 to which feed-lift movement is imparted by a cam on shaft 106. An arm 184, pivoted at 189 to the feed bar 188 and at 186 to the base 102, is formed with a curved slot adjustably engaged by a stud 185 on a pitman 183 operated by an eccentric 182 on shaft 106. Adjustment of stud 185 thereby serves to vary the feed stroke.
